The Definitive Wing-T by Larry Dillon Wing-T Philosophy * The Wing-T offense is designed to score points while at the same time controlling the ball, field position, and wearing down, both physically and mentally, the opponent's defense * It is important that we obtain a balance between the run and the pass to aviod becoming too predictable. THerefore, we will employ a play-action passing attack which complements our run game. * For our offense to be successful our lineman must get off the ball and sustain their blocks for at least ten steps. Our backs must carry out their fakes for at least 20 yards down field. Therefore, considerable amount of time will be spent in practice on fundamentals of this offense. by Larry Dillon Offensive Goals Our offense has five main goals that must be achieved each game to ensure success. * SCORE - We want to score every time we have the ball * CONTROL THE FOOTBALL - Play posession football and control the field position and the clock. * PRESSURE THE DEFENSE - with two basic threats, the run and the pass * ATTACK THE ENTIRE FIELD - both horizontally and vertically, thus spreading the opponent's defense * AVOID MISTAKES - aviod mental mistakes, missed assignments, penalties, and turnovers by Larry Dillon The Huddle Center calls the huddle 7 yards from the ball yelling "HUDDLE HUDDLE" QB stays out till play comes in. QB gives the play and says "READY" and everyone else says "BREAK" and claps. Everyone holds hands in the back. When the QB comes into the huddle everyone is silent. QB LT LG C RG RT Y Z F R X Numbering System and Splits FB's toes 4 yards from tip of ball in a 3 point stance. RB with outside foot splitting tackle and even with the middle of the fullback. WB 3 point and SE 2 point. WB 12 15 yds if in spread. 2 4 8 6 3' 4 2' 2 2' 3 3 2' 5 2' 7 9 10 or 12 yds 1 5 1' by 1' by Larry Dillon Play Calling When a play is called in the huddle it is called the following way Formation, motion, series, back, hole, blocking, pass routes Run Play example: Right, Zac, 223 trap Pass Play Example:Pro Right 923 whip, flag out (pass routes are always right to left) Cadence: QB walks to the line checking defense. He has a rhythmic cadence that uses numbers. Example "2-19 2-19 Set Hut" First sound is on "Hut" On 2 is the second "Hut" QB can audible by using the first number as the snap count as hot number. Example: QB has play 222 on "1". He comes to the line and sees a stunt hole. He'll change the play at the line "1-923 1-923 Set Hut." The recievers and QB's use hand signals every play. by Larry Dillon FORMATIONS Left Y Z F R R F X X Right Y Z Pro Left Y Z F X X Y Pro Right Z R R F Power Left X Z R F F X X Power Right Y Z R Pro Power Left Pro Power Right X Z R X X Y Z R F F Left Slot X Z F R Y X Z R F Right Slot Y Power Left Slot Y by Larry Dillon Y Z X Z F Power Right Slot Y R F R FORMATIONS Left I Y Z F R F R X X Right I Y Z Pro Left I Y Z F R F R X X Y Pro Right Z Left Slot I Y Z F R X X Z Right Slot I Y F R Joker Left Y RT LT Z R F X Joker Right X Z F R RT LT Y Tight Left Y Z F R R F X X Tight Right X Z Ace Left Y Z F X by Larry Dillon X R R F Ace Right Y Z FORMATIONS Duce Left Y Z F R X X R F Duce Right Y Z CUB Left Y Z R QB X X R CUB Right Y Z F QB F Bear Left Y Z QB F R X X R F QB Bear Right Y Z Blue X Y Z F R X R F Red Y Z Tight Blue Y Z F X R X R F Tight Red Y Z Loose Blue Y Z F R by Larry Dillon X X R Loose Red Y Z F Motions AC = Accross Formation ZAC = Z Across Formation RAC = R Across Formation X Y Z R F Pro Right ZAC IN = In Towards Formation ZIN = Z in towards formation XIN = X in towards formation Pro Right Zin Z OUT = Out from Formation (away from Y) Zout = Z out from formation Rout = R out from formation R Pro Right Rout IP = In position of back ZIP = Z in position Z Right Zip by Larry Dillon Motions Jet = Full sprint Across formation (Behind QB) Z Jet X Jet Y R Jet Z F X R Ace Left Z Jet 48 FLY = Full Sprint Behind Formation Z Fly Z Right Z Fly 49 Toss by Larry Dillon Adjustments X Z Y R F loose moves the Y out to pro position X Z Y weak places the Z on weak side (not in slot) R F X Y Z Tight puts the X in next to the tackle R F by Larry Dillon Individual Blocking Techniques 1. Base Block - a block used to block a man on you. Step with play side foot, deliver blow with away side shoulder and forearm. Aim for outside hip of defender drive through man rotate hips to playside. 2. Down Block Used to block first man down on the line, inside on an adjacent offensive lineman. Step flat down to inside with inside foot, rip backside arm through, deliver blow with near shoulder and forearm drive the man down the line. Head should be on the back hip of defensive lineman note: if defensive man is penetrating, use Gap block technique. 3. Fire Block - Used to agressively block man on play side. Step with play side foot, laterally and slightly up field, deliver blow inside shoulder and forearm. Head should be outside of defender. Once you have position on him rotate hips into hole and block turns into base block. 4. Gap Block - Used to block man in inside gap. Step down inside with foot, rip backside arm and leg through. Deliver blow with far side shoulder and forearm, getting head across the D lineman's belt. This is a reverse shoulder block used to stop penetration. 5. Log Block - Block used to hook the end man on the line of scrimmage. Take pull step to the play side, get depth, attempt to head outside and hook defensive man. If he opens up kick him out. 6. Pull - Used to get to the point of attack and carry out assignment. Take short open step with play side foot, rip play side elbow back then rip backside arm and leg through. Continue behind line execute blocking assignment, kick out or wall off. 7. Trap Block - Used to block inside out on a defensive lineman. Take short step with play side foot, rip backside arm and leg through, replace adjacent lineman gaining ground. Deliver blow with playside shoulder and forearm with head upfield. Drive man out of hole. by Larry Dillon 200 Series (Sweep Series) X Y Z R F Basic Movements of Sweep Series F - is performing a dive movement towards the 2 or 3 hole R or Z are performing a sweep motion R or Z are blocking for runner One or Both Gurads are pulling Ball Carriers: R, F or Z by Larry Dillon Right 222 Trap 4-3 C FS 5-2 SS C B T Y FS SS C T B Y Z C B X B E X B T B T N B E Z R R F F 4-4 FS C C B X 5-3 FS C E Z E B T B T B E Y C B T B N B T E Z R F R F 3-4 FS C B E X 6-1 SS C B N B E Y Z R F FS C X SS C B T T B Y Z B E B E R F 6-2 FS C by Larry Dillon X B E T N B T T E Y Z C R F Play 222 trap Formation Right Formation Options Right Pro Right Zin Right Slot Power Left Slot Right I Pro Right Zin Tight Right Ace Right Rip Red Rip Tight Red Rip Loose Red Rip Joker Right FS C E T X SS B N B T E Y Z C R Blocking Scheme Odd Man Front Z - I have been slowly working on creating drill books to be used in the Definitive Wing-T system. I apologize for not getting them on my site yet. I am trying to get them done and posted however with my summer job, spending time with my young ones, and trying to get things ready for the upcoming season at a new school I have been a little busy and have fallen behind in my plans.
I know that several people have expressed interest in these drill books.
I have come up with a new name for my Wing-T system. I have named it the Definitive Wing-T. I named it this because I have tried to make it easier for coaches and players to understand. I use a three digit system. The first number is the series (backfield motion), the second is position getting the ball and the third, the hole that they are going to.
This definitive playbook contains all of the series that also includes the Jet and Fly motion that I have made their own series.
I also include a passing system that I have tried to make easier for the players. This includes a three step, five step, roll out and play action passing.
I have tried to incorporate the traditional Wing-T system with the hybrid system.
The playbook is available for purchase through scribd.com or may be bought here on the blog.
I am sorry to say that there will be a delay in posting the drills books and any further posts for about a month.
I was moving a metal storage cabinet when the side caved in and the entire cabinet and its contents of about 1000 lbs fell on top of me.
I was taken from school to the emergency room and after x-rays and a CT scan the conclusion was that I have 4 badly bruised ribs and a possible hairline fracture of another. The CT confirmed that I do have a perfectly normal functioning brain. I know that this will be a shock to several people.
Therefore I will not be writing on this blog for a little while. It is hard for me to sit in a chair. I am better off laying flat on my back.
I should have everything ready to go and be ready to start typing again in about a month.
For the Past Four Years I have been an assistant coach at a school around the Des Moines, Iowa area. I have not always agreed with the head coaches philosophy. I felt that it was now time for me to part ways.
I will now be coaching at Bondurant-Farrar. An up and coming 2A school who made it to the playoffs last year and lost in the first round. A friend of mine, Adam Bush is the head coach and he asked me to come aboard to sure up the offensive line.
I will still be keeping my eyes pealed for another head coaching position but I have gotten to the point where I don't want to move my family away from the Des Moines area. I have relatives here and it has gotten very expensive and costly to move.
I have had two other offers to become a head coach but would have had to sell my house and move across the state for one and part way across the country for the other.
As much as I want to be a head coach again I think it is more important to protect the sanity and sanctity of my family.
I know I will be given another opportunity in the near future.
Over the next several posts I plan on discussing and sharing some of the drills I have used and discovered for each of the positions in the wing-t system. I shall discuss, O-Line, Receivers, Tight Ends, Running Backs, and QB's.
I am also always open to discussing topics that others may pose to me. I am all ears.
The first set of drills that I will be discussing will be the O-line. I feel that the line is one of the most important positions on the field. With out them a team will not function very well.
I have been trying to decide where to go next with this blog. I definitely want to keep it alive and going. I am not sure with how many people read and value my opinions and what I am trying to do.
I have covered each of my series in fairly good detail I have touched on each my series and included the passing series as well.
The next thing I was thinking about talking about was drills. The drills I use and what other coaches use. I just don't know if that would be something more for the forum though. Not many people have joined the forum.
Some times I get to the point if I don't know if people are even reading this block. I am not going to make this a pitty party. after all the entire reason why I started this blag was for a place for me to put my thoughts as a kind of record of what I am doing for football. I figured if others wanted to read it than so be it.
The reason why I am thinking about doing drills on the blog next is because I have been organizing all of my drill into separate drill books for the different offensive and defensive positions. I have made these drill books to give to my assistant coaches to use and to help organize practice plans.
I have made a drill book for the following: QB's, RB's, Receivers, TE's and interior lineman. I have also made defensive drill books for Interior D-line, D-Ends, LB's, and DB's
If people are interested I may put them on this site to sell also. I would only be basically charging for my time and the materials for me to put them together. I still need to scan them or put them into playmaker pro and then convert them to a PDF. I would also have to charge to cover my costs on paypal.
If you would be interested in something like this please respond to this post. I will then get working on putting them on this site for download.
Q1. What if teams start to play you with a wide defensive end making it virtually impossible for you to run your play to the open side?
We’ll do whatever we can to get that five technique out of the way. We can reach him, pass block him, cut him, give him a down block key, whatever. Just don’t let him turn and run to the sweep. If that’s the case, we instruct our end man on the LOS to control that man how ever he can. If he wants to go outside them push him all the way to the sideline. The back will just look for the lane and make a cut. I coach my backs to always have their head on a swivel and be aware of the field.
Q2. What if you get that strong safety coming up hard on the force and you can’t crack him with your wide receiver?
We tell our wide receiver to step to crack him for two steps. If the strong safety is across the line of scrimmage by then, we will switch assignments with the blocking back the next time we run it. The blocking back will pick him up and the receiver will take number one (the corner).
Q3. What if teams are overloading your tight end side with a 7 and 9 technique and you are still trying to run the tight side?
We’ll just run inside with the tight end blocking down on the 7 technique and the tackle now kicking out on the 9 technique. We’ll have to cut the play up inside because it’s virtually impossible to get outside of that.
I have gotten a lot of my ideas on running the jet and fly from reading stuff from coach Speckman at Willamette college. I have also gotten ideas from Coach Wes Elrod. I have taken ideas from both of these great coaches and tweaked it and made it my own. I do not claim that I have developed this offense myself. I have taken others ideas and put my own twist on it to make it my own. I have changed the numbering system to make it less confusing for my players and my coaches. It works for me and hopefully it will work for others too.
I have made posts about all of my series thus far. from the 200 through the 600 run series. I have also talked about the 700, 800, and 900 passing series. I have definitely left some out since I don't want to give away all my tricks. If you have questions or comments please be sure to ask.
